300,000. That is the number of children
orphaned after 14 years of brutal civil war in Liberia, during which 250,000 people were
killed.
Nadia Bitar, a native Liberian, has created haven missions to provide a
safe and healthy environment for Liberia's orphans so that they may grow up to
be productive citizens and assist in Liberia's rehabilitation. Our purpose at haven missions is to
provide housing, food, medical care and education for as many of Liberia's
orphans as we can. At the moment we care for 28 orphans living in a small 4
room house but we will increase that number to 75 after we build an orphanage
for them. Currently we are in the process of acquiring 6 acres of land to
commence construction of the new
facilities, a children's village, which will include dormitories, a free
clinic, an elementary school catering to 600 hundred students, housing for
caregivers and nurses, as well as a guesthouse for visiting volunteers. The
first children's village will be located on the outskirts of Monrovia, the
capital. We will also plant a 25 acre cash crop farm to provide food for the
kids and their caregivers and a 1000 acre rubber plantation, an investment
which will pay off in seven years to provide funding for the mission and enable
us to start other orphanages throughout Liberia.
The children will benefit from an after-school
vocational training program to teach them useful trades and a mentoring program
to inspire them to reach for the sky. Through our sponsorship program, each
child will receive a dollar a day from a sponsor which will be deposited into a
college fund to enable them to attend university upon their graduation, or to
start a small business upon reaching maturity. We aim to provide not just the
necessities of life, we are giving
them the education and skills needed to rebuild Liberia.
Our ultimate goal is that the children of haven missions
will be empowered adults giving back to their country.
Every child deserves a chance at an independent, healthy, and successful future. Come join us! Together we can make it happen. |
